Printed VS on-line media and challenges for editorial concepts: Example of news magazines in Serbia

AB  - The paper examines the differences in editorial policy between the online and print editions of the two most famous and most influential Serbian news magazines - NIN and Vreme. All the elements of the editorial policies that exist in the modern media system are analyzed - media content (topics), internal agenda settings, form, media, visual and audio elements, gate keepers, readers/consumers, as well as the system of advertising and subscriptions. Based on four years of research, six months content analysis and interviewing the journalists employed in these newsrooms, it was found that only two elements of editorial policy can be defined as different between online and print editions. This implies unconformity regarding new media of the most important print media, e.g. media which addresses decision makers and the most educated part of the society.
AB  - Rad se bavi razlikom između uređivačkih politika on-lajn i štampanih izdanja dva najpoznatija i najuticajnija srpska nedeljnika - NIN i Vreme. Svi elementi uređivačke politike koji postoje u sistemu modernih medija su analizirani - medijski sadržaj (teme), unutrašnja agenda, forma, medij, vizuelni i audio elementi, čuvari kapija, čitaoci/konzumenti, kao i sistem pretplate i oglašavanja. Zaključak izveden na osnovu četvorogodišnjeg istraživanja, šestomesečne analize sadržaja i intervjua sa novinarima zaposlenim u analiziranim redakcijama, ukazuje da se samo dva elementa uređivačke politike razlikuju u štampanim i on-lajn izdanjima, što govori o neprilagođenosti novim medijima najvažnijih štampanih medija, odnosno medija koji se obraćaju donosiocima odluka i najobrazovanijem delu društva.

Serbian news magazines in transition and need for life-long journalists education (NIN and Vreme case study)

AB  - The aim of this paper is to examine the structure of the editorial board of Serbian (weekly) news magazines and the level of education of the journalists employed in these editorial boards through the analysis of a questionnaire on the attitudes and education of journalists in Serbian news magazines, as well as to determine their correlates. On a sample of 43 respondents (more than a half of the employees in the two most influential Serbian news magazines - NIN and Vreme), the study analyzes the correlation of knowledge and skills of Serbian journalists, as well as the requirements that contemporary online journalism places before the media workers. The following items are singled out as the most important elements of the analysis: the surveyed journalists have a lower level of education than the average of Serbian journalists and in most cases they have secondary education, while in 90 percent of the cases they do not have any journalism education; the journalists who participated in the survey have a very high opinion of their education and skills needed for work in most cases, while the percentage of correct answers regarding the questions pertaining to their field of knowledge is very low. Modern job positions that have existed in international magazines for a long time are not yet present in the local media companies, and the largest number of the interviewed journalists have no experience with online journalism, which indicates that the human resources for developing the online editions of Serbian weekly magazines cannot be found among the existing members of the editorial board; instead, new experts whose education should be constantly updated throughout their career need to be hired.
AB  - Cilj ovog rada predstavlja ispitivanje strukture redakcija srpskih njuz magazina, kao i nivoa obrazovanja novinara zaposlenih u ovim redakcijama, kroz analizu Upitnika o stavovima novinara i obrazovanju novinara u srpskim njuz magazinima, kao i određivanje njihovih korelata. Na primeru 43 ispitanika (više od polovine zaposlenih u dva najuticajnija srpska njuz magazina - NIN i Vreme), u radu se analizira i korelacija znanja i sposobnosti koje poseduju srpski novinari i potreba koje savremeno novinarstvo na mreži postavlja pred medijske radnike. Kao najznačajniji elementi analize izdvajaju se sledeće stavke: anketirani novinari su manje obrazovani od srpskog novinarskog proseka i u najvećem broju slučajeva imaju završenu srednju školu, a u čak 90 odsto slučajeva nemaju obrazovanje novinarskog usmerenja; novinari koji su učestvovali u istraživanju u najvećem broju slučajeva imaju izuzetno visoko mišljenje o svom obrazovanju i sposobnosti za rad, dok na pitanjima iz oblasti znanja pokazuju izuzetno nizak procenat tačnih odgovora. Savremene pozicije koje odavno postoje u svetskim magazinima još uvek nisu prisutne u domaćim medijskim kućama, a najveći broj novinara koji su anketirani nema nikakvo iskustvo u on-lajn novinarstvu, što ukazuje da se ljudski resursi za razvijanje on-lajn izdanja srpskih nedeljnika vesti ne mogu pronaći među postojećim članovima redakcije, već se moraju uposliti novi stručnjaci na čijem bi se obrazovanju radilo aktivno tokom čitavog njihovog radnog veka.

Post journalism in the fourth technological revolution

AB  - This paper is considering essential changes which the new media brought to contemporary journalism, also called post journalism by certain authors. These changes are most visible in the following relations: information-source-journalist-journalism-reader/consumer. They are evident in all parts of the communication process and are related to the quality and independence of journalism, as well as its interpretability, analyticity and diversity. Despite expectations, the multi-screen society did not bring significant quality changes, the Serbian media and journalists did not find themselves in it (with rare tabloid profile exceptions), while trivial content has additionally increased the 'polluted' online domain already saturated with multitudes of information. An apparent authorship crisis, inability to find a tenable business model, continuation of impowerishment, a crisis of creative industry and a domination of swallowing the content instead of creating it, has additionally complicated the professional, ethical and sociological habitat. Authors are trying to establish a relation between the causes and the consequences of all these phenomena, offering solutions and emphasizing that increasing atomization, fragmentation and segmentation of the audience, narrowing of their interests and expansion of an antisocial mood could have far-reaching consequences. Not as much for the mass media as for the society itself and for the journalism that forms its integral part as one of the pillars of the civil democratic society - both globally and locally.
AB  - Ovaj rad razmatra suštinske promene koje su novi mediji doneli savremenom novinarstvu, koje neki autori već nazivaju i postžurnalizam. Te promene najvidljivije su u sferama odnosa: informacija - izvor - novinar - novinarstvo - čitalac/ konzument i evidentne su u svim delovima komunikacionog procesa, te se tiču kako kvaliteta i nezavisnosti novinarstva, tako i njegove interpretativnosti, analitičnosti i raznovrsnosti. Multiekransko društvo međutim, nasuprot očekivanjima nije donelo značajne kvalitativne promene, srpski mediji i novinari se u tome nisu najbolje snašli (uz retke izuzetke dominantno tabloidnog profila), a trivijalni sadržaji dodatno su povećali ionako 'zagađenu' i, preobiljem informacija, zasićenu medijsku pogotovo onlajn scenu. Očigledna kriza autorstva, neiznalaženje održivog poslovnog modela, kontinuirano osiromašenje, kriza kreativne industrije i dominacija obrade umesto kreiranja sadržaja - dodatno su zakomplikovali profesionalni, etički, ali i sociološki i demokratski habitus u njihovom izvornom značenju. Autori pokušavaju da uspostave odnos između uzroka i posledica svih ovih fenomena nudeći rešenja, ali i ističući da narastajuća atomizacija, fragmentacija, segmentacija publike, sužavanje njenog interesovanja i širenje antisocijalnog raspoloženja mogu imati dalekosežne posledice. Ne toliko po masovne medije koliko po samo društvo i novinarstvo kao njegov integralni deo i jedan od stubova građanskog demokratskog poretka. Kako na globalnom, tako pogotovo na lokalnom nivou.

Narration as a global trend of journalistic documentary forms

AB  - The paper critically reviews the role of journalistic documentary forms in contemporary journalism, mainly of global print media, with the intention of achieving top interpretation by using in-depth research and documentary mediation. The focus of the research is on the analysis of narrative in documentary reportage, not only as representative of new documentaristics, but also as a leader of global trends in storytelling, which already rules the media industry. A case study of National Geographic on a representative sample allows an insight into composition and mechanisms of intentionality in the analyzed documentary reportages, from which we can derive explanations for their ways of influence on the mind and emotions of the recipient, with ubiquitous psychagogical features. An immeasurable impact which those features have on the multimillion audiences/readers is also considered here.
AB  - Tekst kritički preispituje ulogu novinarskih dokumentarnih formi u savremenom novinarstvu, prevashodno globalnih štampanih medija, kroz intenciju ostvarivanja vrhunske interpretacije uz pomoć 'in deepth' istraživanja i kroz dokumentarno posredovanje. Fokus istraživanja je na analizi narativa dokumentarnih reportaža, kao ne samo reprezentativnih predstavnika nove dokumentaristike, već i predvodnika globalnog trenda 'storytelling-a', koji je uveliko zavladao medijskom industrijom. Studija slučaja 'National Geographic' na reprezentativnom uzorku omogućava uvid u kompoziciju, te mehanizme postojanja intencionalnosti u obrađivanim dokumentarnim reportažama, iz čega proishodi objašnjenje načina njihovog delovanja na svest i osećanja recipijenta, uz sveprisutna psihagoška svojstva. Baš kao i nemerljiv uticaj koji na taj način ostvaruju na višemilionsku publiku - čitaoce.

Domination of PR over journalistic content in Serbian print media: Causes and consequences

AB  - The paper considers structural causes for the domination of PR over information content in the media, with special emphasis on the Serbian media scene - mainly the print and online editions. Recognition of the growing global trend of storytelling finds its roots in formation and hyper fast development of the PR industry and parallel academic research and foundation of public relations as a special discipline within public studies, in a period spanning almost a century. The world economic crisis and its repercussions which have caused the biggest crisis of the media industry (primarily in the print media) ever, along with the digital storm which has totally transformed the information and communication channels, as well as the profession crisis - gave additional power to the PR and opened new spaces for the boom of the PR machinery. Continual shrinking of resources for gathering and processing of information and consequential disappearance of investigative and interpretative journalism coupled with increased possibilities for politicians and companies to deliver their messages directly to the public have created a global media trend which spilled over impoverished Serbian media scene over the last few years, making it dependant on this kind of PR content.
AB  - U radu se razmatraju strukturni uzroci dominacije PR-a nad informativnim sadržajima u medijima sa akcentom na srpsku medijsku scenu, prevashodno štampanih i onlajn izdanja. Priznanje narastajućeg globalnog trenda storitelinga (storytelling) svoje korene pronalazi u nastanku i veoma brzom razvoju PR industrije i paralelno s tim akademskim izučavanjem i teorijsko-aplikativnim utemeljenjem odnosa s javnošću, kao zasebne discipline studija javnosti u neprekinutom periodu od skoro jednog veka. Ekonomska kriza i njene reperkusije koje za posledicu imaju najveću krizu medijske industrije (štampe pre svih) u istoriji postojanja, uz digitalnu oluju koja je u potpunosti transformisala način informisanja i komunikacione kanale, kao i kriza profesije - dodatno su ojačali ulogu i otvorili nove prostore narastajućoj PR mašineriji. Nastavak smanjivanja resursa za prikupljanje i obradu vesti, posledično nestajanje istraživačkog i interpretativnog novinarstva, uz sve veće mogućnosti političara i kompanija da svoje poruke direktno isporučuju javnosti - globalni je medijski trend koji se poslednjih godina prelio i na osiromašenu srpsku medijsku scenu, čineći je zavisnom od ovakve vrste PR sadržaja.

Role and importance of journalistic documentary forms in print media

AB  - World economy crisis, as well as the global technological and media changes, made tectonical disorder mostly in print media. For some time now, there is a question of their psychical survival. News magazines are on the hit, as their recent rolls are now taken by daily newspapers. There is a consent on social - economic and technological challenges that Serbian press has to answer, but the question - what to do with news magazines and what further, remains open. The same is with interpretation. This article is trying to find answers in journalistic documentary forms which are more and more present and which are continuation of positive journalistic interpretative evolution, through proof of necessity of bigger presence of documentary forms as specific segment of investigative journalism. Besides theoretical considerations and definitions of the most common genres, this paper, based on case study of three news magazines with biggest circulation: Vreme, NIN and Pečat, shows results of research and provides directions/recommendations for comeback of credibility and quality of referent information-political weekly news press in Serbia.
AB  - Svetska ekonomska kriza i globalne tehnološke i medijske promene izazvale su tektonske poremećaje prevashodno u štampanim medijima. Već neko vreme, postavlja se čak i pitanje njihovog fizičkog opstanka. Na udaru su najviše nedeljnici, pogotovo njuz magazini, čiju doskorašnju ulogu uveliko preuzima dnevna štampa. I pored saglasnosti oko socijalno-ekonomskih i tehnoloških izazova, kojima srpska štampa neminovno mora da odgovori, ostaje otvoreno pitanje: šta sa nedeljnicima i kuda dalje? Nedostatak kredibilnog i istraživačkog novinarstva - nije upitan. Interpretativnost, takođe. Ovaj tekst pokušava da odgovore nađe u sve prisutnijim novinarskim dokumentarnim formama, kao nastavku pozitivne žurnalističke interpretativne evolucije, kroz dokazivanje neophodnosti većeg prisustva 'dokumentaristike' kao posebnog segmenta istraživačkog novinarstva. Pored teorijskih razmatranja i u okviru njih definisanja najprisutnijih žanrova, ovaj rad, kroz studiju slučaja tri najtiražnija njuz magazina: Vreme, NIN i Pečat, pokazuje rezultate istraživanja i daje putokaze za povratak kredibiliteta i kvaliteta referentne informativno-političke nedeljne srpske štampe.

AB  - Interview as research method found its place long time ago in science, and now it is becoming one of fundamental acts of contemporary journalism. Since first journalism theories, there has been disagreement among authors and misunderstanding of difference between interview as a method or technique and interview as one of journalism genres. World economy crisis hit all media, mostly press. There are less financial resources for serious research and investigative articles and there is more and more interview in its different modalities, using it as the easiest way to collect information or get understanding of people's views. Contemporary media, mostly press, can not be imagined without news, reports, reportages and analytical articles. The most dominant method of whole interpretative and investigative journalism is - interview, with its different modalities.
AB  - Intervju kao istraživački metod, pored toga što je odavno našao svoje utemeljenje u nauci, i u oblasti žurnalizma postao je jedan od fundamentalnih aktova savremenog istraživačkog novinarstva. Još od prvih novinarskih teorija postoji velika nesaglasnost autora i nerazumevanje razlike između intervjua kao metoda, odnosno tehnike, i intervjua kao oblika novinarskog izražavanja, tj. novinarskog žanra. Svetska ekonomska kriza pogodila je sve medije, štampane ponajviše. Finansijskih sredstava za ozbiljna istraživanja i istraživačke tekstove je sve manje, a intervjua u njegovim različitim modalitetima sve više. Naročito onih koji su 'najlakši put' dolaženja do informacija ili saznavanja gledišta. Savremeni mediji danas, pre svega štampani, nezamislivi su bez vesti, izveštaja, reportaža, članaka. A zajednički imenitelj i dominantni metod celokupnog interpretativnog i istraživačkog novinarstva jeste upravo - intervju. U svojim različitim modalitetima.

AB  - In times of mass media, it is impossible to act in political, business or commercial area without organized communication with public. In these conditions, public relations, promotional activities and marketing are having more and more important place in all areas of society. Serbian journalism offer forgets its basic functions, acting in the service or public relations and marketing of different organizations, institutions, companies or individuals. The most frequent journalism genre in which these activities are done is interview and its most frequent role is publicity.
AB  - Delovanje u političkoj areni, poslovnom ili komercijalnom polju, nezamislivo je bez organizovanog komuniciranje sa javnošću u eri masovnih medija. U takvim uslovima odnosi sa javnošću kao i promotivne aktivnosti i marketing zauzimaju sve značajnije mesto u svim oblastima društva. Srpski žurnalizam sve češće zapostavlja svoje osnovne funkcije, stavljajući se u službu PR-a i marketinga različitih organizacija, institucija, kompanija, pa i pojedinaca. Najčešći oblik novinarskog izražavanja u kome se realizuju ovakve aktivnosti jeste - intervju, a njegova najčešća uloga jeste upravo ostvarivanje publiciteta.

AB  - For last several decades, on-lines magazines are constantly raising in its popularity. Time - lines among Internet journalists are measured in minutes, and there is less time for careful news checking. Internet becomes big supermarket where information gathering resembles mosaic production. Data acquisition favors hypertext linkage of different web pages of news agencies, televisions, private companies and public administration divisions, leaving very limited space for writing and personal creativity. On-line journalism could be perceived as McLuhan's explosion or as implosion of new technologies and communications. New journalism changes entire existing media world and it's surrounding. This paper presents analyzes of most important characteristics of modern on-line magazines, with special emphases on key points - hypertext and interactivity. .
AB  - Prisustvo i čitanost on-lajn magazina poslednjih decenija ima konstantnu tendenciju rasta. Blagovremenost se među novinarima na Mreži već određuje minutima, pri čemu najčešće izostaje brižljiva provera izbora vesti. Mreža postaje ogromni supermarket informacija gde prikupljanje vesti često liči na izradu kolaža i hipertekstualnog povezivanja različitih sajtova novinskih agencija, televizija, privrednih kompanija, javne administracije sa oskudnim prostorom ostavljenim za pisanje i individualnu kreativnost. On-lajn novinarstvo može biti shvaćeno i kao Mekluanova eksplozija i kao implozija nove tehnologije i komunikacija. Novo novinarstvo u potpunosti menja postojeći medijski svet i njegovo okruženje. Ovaj tekst predstavlja analizu najznačajnijih karakteristika savremenih on-lajn magazina pri čemu se posebno markiraju ključne tačke: hipertekstualnost i interaktivnost. .
