AB - Introduced measures to deal with COVID-19 pandemic in
Serbia affected everyday life of people. Media coverage during
the pandemic played a significant role in providing verified
information, protecting human health and well-being.
In order to gain insight into the reactions of social work students
on introduced measures and media coverage about
these measures during the state of emergency in Republic of
Serbia, an analysis of reflective journals is presented. Eighty
reflective journals were analyzed, where students’ reactions
on introduced measures and media coverage related to
these measures are monitored and linked to the electronic
archive of the public media service Radio Television of Serbia
news. Students’ thoughts on several identified measures
are presented and analyzed together with their reactions
on media coverage about these measures. Findings indicate
the important role of the content and ways of media reporting in creation of reflections, as well as the importance of using reflective journals in both education and preservation of mental health. Possible directions of mental health improvement through media coverage in crisis situations and recommendations
for education of social workers are presented.
ulogu u pružanju provjerenih informacija i zaš titi ljudskih prava i dobrobiti.
izvješćivanje o tim mjerama tijekom izvanrednog stanja u Republici Srbiji, u radu
javne medijske usluge novosti Radio Televizije Srbije.
dnevnika u obrazovanju i u očuvanju duševnog zdravlja.

13 do 19 godina.
migracijama u politikama Evropske unije.
AB - Children in migration on the Balkan route are, in addition to other threaten-
ing circumstances, exposed to all basic types (physical, psychological, sexual)
and numerous other forms of violence, in the countries of origin and during
the journey.
This paper discusses the experiences of children in migration on the Balkan
route from the point of view of children’s rights. The research results presented
are part of a wider project: “Violence against children on the Balkan migration
route – solutions through advocacy and research”. The project was developed
in cooperation with Save the Children NWB and the Center for Interdisciplinary
Studies of the University of Sarajevo, with the support of the Sexual Violence

AB - In order to respond to the growing needs of migrant
families with children, and especially unaccompanied children,
who were traveling on the Western Balkan route, social workers
and other field workers and child protection officers had to acquire
new knowledge and develop specific competencies in a relatively
short period of time. Although Serbia is mainly a country of transit, migrant children, who have been staying in Serbia for a longer
period of time, have experienced challenges in access to services
due to language barriers, overstretched capacities and insufficient
coordination. The aim of the paper is to describe and reflect on the
process used to develop a design, which ensures migrant children
are consulted throughout the process and are the co-creators of a
social work curriculum responding to their vulnerabilities. In order
to gain insights on the views of children on the move regarding
competencies of the workforce in both the government and NGO
institutions, a consultation process was introduced with both unaccompanied and accompanied children in Serbia. The methodology
of consultations was designed as interactive and safe for children to express their views and experiences. Results indicate that children should be key participants in the co-creation of knowledge in
matters that concern them, and it is necessary to develop, test and
evaluate the ways in which we can best understand their experiences, points of view and perspectives and incorporate them into
knowledge for action.

Resilience and preparedness for leaving care increase their chances for successful transition and social integration. This article aims to understand the resilience of youth leaving care in Serbia and the relationship between resilience, type of placement (foster, residential or kinship) and preparedness for leaving care. Quantitative analysis of replies 134 adolescents leaving alternative care had made in self-assessment questionnaires showed: high resilience scores of subjects, lower resilience of youth leaving residential than foster care and interconnectedness between the resilience and most of the indicators of preparedness for emancipation. Results suggest that resilience: (a) could be fostered by improving mental health, structured leisure time, self-care and social skills, and by quality foster carers' support; (b) contributes to positive feelings and general positive attitude toward life; (c) is not connected to school achievements and support by family and other caregivers; (d) of care leavers had more to do with their skills to gain social support than with receiving support from family and the alternative care system. Future research could investigate emancipation outcomes of youth with different baseline resilience and preparedness levels.

AB - The pandemic of the novel corona virus has led to changes in people’s daily
lives and has produced feelings of insecurity and anxiety that can have neg-
ative consequences for students’ learning and psychological health. Upon
switching to online teaching at the Faculty of Political Science, University of
Belgrade, a pre-examination task of writing reflective diaries was introduced
for students of social politics and social work on two subjects: Counseling
and Sociotherapy and Social Work with Children and Youth.
The aim of the task was to identify, but also recognize and raise awareness of
reactions and experiences related to the pandemic and encourage introspec-
tion. The thematic analysis of 80 reflective diaries and selected topics were
presented: attitude towards writing diaries, understanding the good aspects
of the state of emergency, family relations, mood swings, attitude towards eating and food preparation, creating structure, developing creativity, anx-
iety, depression, anger and fear. The results indicate the importance of nur-
turing and preserving mental health for the well-being of people and the
possible directions for improving the practice of educational institutions in
crisis situations.

AB - Transforming classroom knowledge into practice competency is particularly challenging in social work with children and families. It involves complex, competitive practice approaches and different service settings with procedures and norms influencing a child's wellbeing. The paper presents the content, application, and evaluation of a module based on a case scenario which considers the limitations and achievements of social work with children and families in different settings. A mixed-method approach was applied to this review process. Students were given an evaluative questionnaire based on the theoretical framework of experiential learning whereupon they wrote reflective essays describing their learning experience. Case method contributes to the acquisition of reflective, integrative, and stimulating knowledge. The participation level contributes to the students' satisfaction during such learning. Students have learned that families with multiple and complex needs require a holistic approach that separate systems and services cannot provide. This way of learning, with certain limitations, allows activation and an intensive learning experience for large groups of students relevant for a number of social work schools.

AB - Information technologies at the threshold of the third decade of the 21st century represent a significant factor in the psychosocial development of children and youth. The content presented by the media (using contemporary audio-visual effects) ranges from informative, through educational, entertainment, to sensational and shocking. Media content draws attention and leaves a strong impression on children, and often, provokes reactions of agitation. Children are trying to find ways to overcome this anxiety using a variety of strategies, and one of them is the need to talk about it. On the national child's line, a modern telephone and counseling support service for children and young people, there is a tendency for an increased number of calls from children that are presumed to be related to certain media events. This paper will present findings of research on the impact of disturbing media content on children as well as observations by children's counselors on calls related to sensationalist media content. The findings will be interpreted in relation to children's reactions and strategies for overcoming feelings of distress with calls during discussions with telephone counselors on the child's line.

Emancipation of young people leaving alternative care: Challenges and chances

AB - Young people who are preparing to leave alternative care to independence face numerous challenges. However, a number of youth were able to overcome difficulties and these young people achieve a stable environment arragements. The research is part of a larger study and findings from the focus groups will be presented. There were five focus groups which involved 26 young people in care (kinship, foster and residential). Data collection is in a function of a closer consideration of the ways in which young people participate in planning how to understand their part in this process, what are their fears and challenges, but also sources of support that are available to them during the process of preparation for emancipation. Despite the fact that most young people in the sample estimated to possess the skills of taking care of themselfs, the youth still experience lack of support and lack of readiness for leaving care. These findings suggest the need for a timely preparation for independence, which focuses work on the life story to strengthen the faith in their own abilities.

AB - The process of preparing young people for leaving alternative care is not sufficiently researched in Serbia. In order to define what support is necessary for their successful emancipation, this study of 150 young people in care aims to analyse both their preparedness for leaving alternative care, and whether the type of placement (kinship, foster, or residential) makes a difference to the level of preparedness. A mixed method approach was applied. Quantitatively, questionnaires assessing factors contributing to successful emancipation were administered. Qualitatively, transcripts of discussions from 5 focus groups, consisting of a total of 26 participants from all 3 types of placement, were analysed. Most of the youth in the sample indicated they have self-care and housekeeping skills, social skills to make friendships and connections, good grades in school, and aspirations for further schooling and starting a family. However, negative feelings such as disturbance, fear, and sorrow, and a sense of missing support and feeling insufficiently prepared for leaving care were also evident in their answers. Both the focus groups and surveys suggest that the biggest concern with the independence of young people leaving alternative care is financial stability. Several recommendations for ways to influence the system in order to improve outcomes for young people are made.

AB - The 2002-2011 reforms of the social welfare system in Serbia produced changes to the assessment model in the field of child welfare. In addition to risks and needs, the new model considers the strengths of the child, family and community, marking a significant innovation for social welfare services. This paper aims to examine the perceptions of caseworkers regarding the strengths of the new assessment model that is used in social welfare centres in Serbia. Based upon a representative, stratified and random sample of 347 records of children who were referred to alternative care during a period of intense reform (2006-2011), notes taken by caseworkers were collected and analysed. The results indicate that strengths were poorly identified at the onset of work with the children, but improvement followed later in the process. This finding leads us to the conclusion that there are serious challenges and difficulties in transitioning from the problem-oriented model to the new strengths-oriented approach in the Serbian social welfare system.

AB - In the context of evaluating child protection reform in Serbia, we explored the concept of positive youth development as well as how they experienced and understood the experience of placement. We sought to understand how youth perceive their strengths, the role of the care system, their views on how life experiences affect their strengths and how they see their future. Our position is that the way in which children see their situation is equally valuable as any other point of view, and that their doubts, questions and views should be learned in the research process. We used the methodology of semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with 16 young people in care aged 13-18 years. Results indicate their limited involvement in the process of making decisions related to their life and future. There is a strong need for meaningful involvement of children and young people in order to ensure their positive development.

AB - The last two decades was marked by an increase in the number of studies dealing with young people leaving alternative care. Until the 90's of the XX century, research on small samples, describing the needs and lives of young people who have left the system of alternative care, were represented. This paper provides insight into the policies of different countries in terms of young people' transition to independence and examines the differences that exist in determining the concepts, laws and the outcomes of leaving alternative care. Studies have shown that young people leaving alternative care face the risk of social exclusion and marginalization and a lack of political action directed towards this vulnerable group. At the beginning, the challenges and difficulties faced by young people in Western societies drew attention of researchers (Dixon and Stein, 2002; Social Exclusion Unit, 2003). These results were disturbing both for underprivileged young people in care and the social protection system, because it's likely that they will become beneficiaries of the social protection system, as well as socially excluded and dependent on social welfare services as adults. Although in developed countries there are similarities in terms of protection of young people leaving care, the differences in the economic, social, cultural and political context probably influence the different approaches regarding the measures taken to ensure the well-being of young people. Thus, Corden (2001: 288) suggests that the strength of comparing different context lies in a better understanding of alternative frameworks and different perspectives in considering good and bad solutions among different countries.

AB - Outline of the support programs for families and children in European Union, its context, underlying objectives and measures, is the aim of this paper. Given the diversity of European family policies, this overview offers insight into current situation in the area of family policy and highlights the need for greater harmonization and better coordination of national legislation in this area. One part is dedicated to the impact of economic crises on the family and repercussions that it had on the family policies of the member states.

AB - The article presents a development of the systemic family approach as theoretical and therapeutic frame that considers client in relations to gender roles. Structural and strategic family therapy, symbolic-experimental and contextual model developed within systemic family approach are discussed in the view of gender perspective, through its theoretical concepts as well as through therapeutic interventions. Feminist ideas had considerable influence on further development of family therapy. Postgender approach tends to consider as well as balance place of gender perspective in personal and relational development. Modern therapist faces demands to reconsider his own values and beliefs in relation to patriarchal system as well as to values and beliefs of his client and his family.
