In the mid-nineties academic society around the world observed a new phenomenon
in the representation of media content, which is not so surprising today: journalistic
storytelling. In English-speaking countries, the everyday term is called storytelling,
and a common definition of similar terms of social science would be narrative
discourse. Under this term, we consider the romanticized, adequately softened image
of important events and social developments that the media are reporting about. The
narrative is achieved by the method of telling a warm human story and by shifting the
focus of the plot from institutions and official spokesmen far from the common man,
the one who is actually related to the story, even though these “ordinary” citizens speak
and display socially desirable attitudes. Journalists, then, change their role from being
the watchdogs of democracy to being the machines of fiction.
Narratives are like fairy tales: we believe them and reproduce their patterns;... only,
they are slightly more complicated than the stories from our childhood. Storytelling,
furthermore, provides justification and engages mass activities, synchronizing the
values of individuals in a society and mobilizing feelings. It extends regulatory action
powers through self-examination and self-censorship, whether this regulation is
conscious or not. The essence and existence of a man become the narrative, and there
is no existence without a narrative. The essence is lost in translation
